Abstract

Pierre Francois Le Courayer (1681-1776) was a French Catholic priest, canon of Ste Genevieve and Professor of Philosophy and Theology; He first published his justification of the canonical validity of English clerical ordinations in Nancy in Lorraine in 1723 as a two-volume treatise: Dissertation sur la Validite des Ordinations Anglaises and Sur la Succession des Eveques de l’Eglise Anglicane . The study appeared in an English translation as A Defence of the Validity of the English Ordinations, and of the Succession of the Bishops of the Church of England (London, 1725). Written by one who never ceased to claim he was a Catholic priest, the work evoked from English Catholics accusations of religious treason on the part of its author. Oxford, however, awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Divinity, and in addition he was granted a government pension.
