Jul 20, 2026 · 3 authors · 3 topics

Abstract

Abstract In this chapter, the authors focus on integrating issues of race and emotions in high school civic and geography education by focusing on the often-neglected periods of the Civil Rights Movement, particularly the early to mid-20th century. Specifically, the Great Migration and Green Book are both discussed. The chapter explores how racial dynamics and the emotional responses they provoke have shaped civic identity, geographic movement, and broader democratic processes in the United States. The authors offer classroom strategies to engage students in critical discussions about power, race, civic participation, and space, while also centering the emotional experiences that accompany these topics.
