Abstract
With the decline of the national power in the middle period of the Ming dynasty, the situation in northern border area became dangerous .When Yang Yiqing(杨一清)who was keen and energetic took charge of the frontier defense affairs in Shanxi(陕西), he took effective methods against the social abuses. His main measures were to dispense reward and punishment impartially, to employ talented persons, to build defensive walls and other necessary defensive installation, to guarantee the normal production and living of the army and the people, to enlarge an army and train the soldiers, to improve the weapons, and to raise and increase grain reserves by means of opening up wasted land and growing food grain. After these measures had been carried out smoothly, the condition of Shanxi's frontier defense improved greatly.
