Abstract
United States is continuing development of A1B reactor for the Navy’s new CVN 21 class aircraft carrier.The CVN 21 class lead ship is expected to be authorized in 2008 and to go to sea in 2015.The A1B reactor will provide approximately 25 percent more energy,nearly three times the electric plant generating capability,and will require half of the reactor department sailors when compared to today’s Nimitz class aircraft carriers.The nuclear propulsion plant design of CVN 21 is well underway.Not only will the A1B reactor enable the Navy to meet current forecasted operational requirements of CVN 21,for example the electro magnetic launching system,but just as importantly,it will provide flexibility to deal with projected warfighting needs in the future.
