Abstract
This study aims to develop a music appreciation lesson using gamification and the metaverse and to analyze its educational effects in order to overcome the limitations of teacher-centered music appreciation classes, in which students often experience difficulties in actively participating. Music appreciation is an act of listening with a specific purpose and requires an active attitude from the listener. However, music appreciation classes conducted in schools have limitations in enabling learners to actively engage with music, understand and respond to it, and internalize its beauty through appreciation activities. Accordingly, this study designed a music appreciation lesson that utilized elements of gamification and a metaverse environment to promote learners’ interest and active participation. In addition, a “Title-Making” activity was incorporated to help learners internalize the meaning of music. The designed lesson was implemented with third-year music major students at C Arts High School. After the lesson, its educational effects were analyzed through a student satisfaction survey, as well as evaluations conducted by two in-service teachers and six pre-service music teachers. The results of the study indicated that the teaching and learning strategies applied in this lesson had a positive effect on enhancing learners’ interest and encouraging active participation in class. Furthermore, the “Title-Making” activity was found to promote learners’ active appreciation attitudes and support them in constructing the meaning of music. Therefore, it is hoped that this study will contribute to diversifying music appreciation classes and serve as a reference for designing new teaching and learning methods in music education.
