A schematic overview of a standard GC×GC set-up, showing its main components, is given in figure 1 . It consists of a primary dimension GC column ( 1 column) which is coupled in series to a secondary dimension GC column ( 2 column), having a different selectivity, by means of a GC column connector [2] . The 1 column is attached to the GC-injector and the 2 column is attached to the detector. The 1 column is positioned in the main GC oven ( 1 oven) and the 2 column is in installed in the 1 oven or in a separate, secondary GC oven ( 2 oven). The most important component of a GCGC instrument, often referred to as the 'heart' of a GCGC, is the modulator. In most cases the modulation takes places on the 2 column or on a retention gap, which is a deactivated capillary column without a stationary-phase, having the same internal diameter as the 2 column.
