Abstract
In this chapter, the two most popular zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) forward converters, the resonant reset and the active clamp are presented, with the active clamp forward converter in particular discussed in detail, given its widespread use in industry. It discusses the flyback versions of these converters and concludes with alternatives to resonant reset and active clamp converters. The active clamp converter, which was first proposed in the late 1970s-early 1980s is a very popular and commonly used converter topology - arguably the most popular DC-DC lower power topology - and thus its operation and design will be explained in detail in the chapter. Flyback converters with regenerative energy snubbers may be a more attractive option as they do not have auxiliary switch switching losses and they can transfer energy from the primary to the output through the regenerative energy mechanism.
