Abstract

While at War, the seventh film directed by Alejandro Amenábar, was released in 2019 with a clear international forecast. The following research aims to analyse the representation of the film's protagonist, Miguel de Unamuno, and its potential impact on foreign audiences. To do so, we will first analyse Unamuno's speech during the film's climactic scene, the confrontation between the intellectual and Millán-Astray, in order to identify the sources on which the scriptwriters have based their reconstruction of the event. Next, we will pay attention to Unamuno's complex character to determine which of his facets have been represented in the film and which have been omitted. Finally, we will approach the possible international impact of While at War through subtitling and dubbing.
