Abstract
Jimmy's picture book entitled Turn Left Turn Right (1999) was adapted to be the same title film in 2003. Based on the institutionalized collective creation and the consideration of local production, it causes differences in narrative form and gender image between picture book and film. This article adopts the concept of transtextuality to compare and discuss the commonness and differentiation of narrative form and gender image between picture book and film during the procedure of literature adaptation. It considers that the expressional form of picture book includes both iconographic and literate language. During the procedure of adaptation, it involves the imitation and creation while crossing different forms. Indeed. Jimmy's picture book is the combination of different texts. Furthermore, the film abandons/maintains, re-presents represents, rewrites/reconstructs during the procedure of literature adaptation. This film unceasingly dialogizes with the picture book, and generates transtextual phenomenon while quoting the poetry of Love at First Sight from Polish woman poet Wislawa Szymborska and the films of Needing You, Fallen Angels, and Chungking Express.
