The history and design of double–deck buses and coaches

Abstract

The paper briefly describes the history of the double–deck bus and coach. This type of vehicle is used most extensively in Britain, but increasing numbers are entering service around the world. The main design problems which the double–decker imposes are discussed. The three main considerations are overall height and interior headrooms; weight; and what compromises can be tolerated in order to reduce the vehicle's price. The most common approaches to double–decker chassis and body design are described. The recent developments of very large three–axle urban buses, and of novel coach designs. show that there continue to be important innovations in double–decker design.
