Abstract
A short documentary film, Please Vote for Me ( 请投我一票 ) (2007), directed by Weijun Chen and produced by Don Edkins for Step International, forms the basis of discussion and analysis in lesson 4. The film follows an experiment in democracy, as a 3 rd grade class holds what may be the first attempt at a Chinese primary school to hold an election – this one for the important position of class monitor. The three candidates – only eight years old – are coached and cajoled by their teacher and doting parents, making the process highly competitive and combative. With the help of carefully graded lesson material, learners focus on understanding the election process; then they can consider how the elementary school students understand the term “democratic elections” and what the film suggests about democratization on a larger scale in China. Finally, students will analyze how the school election is framed and presented.
