Abstract

In this article, the terms muqrī and qārī and the basic characteristics of the people described in this context are examined through analysis in the context of the approaches of Ibn al-Jazarī (d. 833/1429), one of the authorities of the science of recitation. "Muqrī" is one of the names that he describes as a reader and teacher in his works such as Ibn al-Jazarī, al-Nashr fi al-Qırāāt al-ʿAshr, Tayyibah al-Nashr fi al-Qırāāt al-’Ashr and Gāyah al-Nihāyah. He talks about it with the terms “muqrī” and “qārī”; He gives extensive explanations on both subjects, especially in his work Muncid al-Muqriīn and Murshid al-Tālibīn. It is understood that the definitions and definitions made by Ibn al-Jazarī regarding the mentioned terms are in a pioneering position in determining the nature of the relevant terms in the field of recitation. Accordingly, this study covers the basic qualifications for those who teach and read the Holy Qur’ān, mentioned in some other classical sources, especially in the work of Ibn al-Jazarī. Ibn al-Jazarī devotes the entire first part of his work named Muncid al-Muqriīn and Murshid al-Tālibīn, which consists of seven chapters, to the terms muqrī and qārī in recitation and their necessary characteristics; After the definition of recitation, it deals with the terms muqrī and qārī and touches upon the basic qualifications on the relevant subject. In this context, Ibn al-Jazarī, who describes the muqrī as a scholar of recitation and the qārī as a reader of the Qur’ān, touches upon the issues that muqrī and qārī must comply with and examines issues such as receiving a fee and accepting gifts in the recitation of the Qur’ān. Ibn al-Jazarī especially emphasizes the etiquette that muqrī and qārī should follow. According to him, people with these attributes, who carry the weight of the Qur’ān, should have especially sincere and sincere intentions. These people, who have completed their spiritual education, should not expect any benefit from performing or teaching the Qur’ān. Muqrī and qārī must act with the confidence that they will receive the reward of their deeds in the afterlife in terms of reciting the Qur’ān. While Ibn al-Jazarī mentions his thoughts in Muncid al-Muqriīn, he also makes reference to verses and hadiths when necessary. In Muncid al-Muqriīn, Ibn al-Jazarī gives very remarkable examples from the behaviors of leading recitation scholars regarding the recitation training method of muqrī and qārī. The purpose of this study is to discuss the terms muqrī and qārī and the relevant qualifications in this context in the context of the explanations given by Ibn al-Jazarī in Muncid al-Muqriīn. There is also occasional reference to works such as al-Nashr and Tayyibah al-Nashr. Accordingly, in addition to the views of Ibn al-Jazarī, the study also includes the explanations of al-Nawawī (d. 676/1277) and other names whose thoughts he benefited from on the subject.
