A History of Group Theory through the Lives of Group Theorists: Hans Fitting - Part 1
Mattia Brescia, Francesco de Giovanni, Marco Trombetti
We are glad to introduce an attempt of a systematic historical account of Group Theory inspected by means of the lives and the works of its main actors. Our aim is to bring the interested reader through original correspondances, published and unpublished works, historical perspectives, diatribes and friendship. We begin here with the publication of two letters and one postcard written by Fitting to Helmut Hasse. For each of these, the reproduction of the original is proposed, followed by its transcription and translation. This first part concerning Fitting’s activity is closed by the reproduction of the second part of his Habilitationsschrift, that is quoted in the above correspondence. We are grateful to the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen for epistolary sources provided.
