Abstract

In this fourth episode of the Doinel saga, the hero’s divorce becomes the pretext for a reflexion on the inadequacies of language. Different modes of communication misfire, especially between men and women. Although filmed as a comedy, Bed and Board displays overtones of deep existential malaise and a schizoid vision of everyday life. Doinel’s inability to fit socially seems terminal. Shot-by-shot analysis: As they leave their apartment, Doinel and his wife review their emotional conflicts.
