1151 turns · 59 minHello and welcome, uh, One True Measure Patreon team. Today we have a very special guest and a special episode. Uh, my name's Jack, a part of the, the greater One True Measure team. And, and today I've got with me, we've got Jayden.
Yeah. Hello. You guys recognize me, I hope. [laughs]
Surely. Surely by now-
Yeah [laughs]
... you recognize this face. Um, we're gonna go through this, uh, this young man's very interesting and, uh, and unique story and experiences today. Um, and I think we'll, we'll kick it off, mate. Do you wanna give a little bit of an introduction, uh, to yourself and, and then we can start to-
Yeah
... get into your early life stuff.
Yeah. So basically, uh, my name's Jayden. Um, I work here at Magic Studios, uh, where Blake films the One True Measure. So usually I'm on the other side of this.
Yep.
I don't really get to be on this side of the camera.
Roles, roles reversed.
Yeah. Um, but yeah, uh, did high school all here. Grew up in Singapore. Um, yeah, did a few little things entrepreneurial-
Yeah
... after leaving high school. Uh, worked in the... Yeah, done a bunch of stuff. Worked in the printing industry, selling software.
Yeah. Wow.
Um, worked in media marketing straight out of high school, doing a lot of admin and marketing-
Yeah
... and stuff on that side. Um, and then yeah, Chris gave me an opportunity to come work here. Um, love social media. Did, did... That's a big one. Yeah. [laughs]
[laughs]
Uh, did social media towards the end of high school, year 12-
Yeah
... and the year after that. Grew to about 95,000 followers.
Crikey.
Um, and then-
On what platform?
On TikTok.
TikTok. Yep.
Yeah. Um, then just fell out of love with it.
Yeah.
Yeah, it just wasn't what I wanted. I... So the way I thought about it in high school is I'd post what I would, what would do well.
Mm.
And then I just fell out of love what I was doing well.
Yeah.
Like, it was just... Yeah, it just wasn't what I liked anymore.
Straight away-
Yeah
... you, you talk about Singapore.
Yeah.
That's it. Like, in that whole intro-
[laughs]
... that just throws you straight away.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, how do... Why are you in Singapore? How'd you get there?
Um, Dad, Dad moved there in, like, the '80s.
Yeah. Wow, okay.
So he, he grew up in Melbourne, went traveling.
Yeah.
Um, got an opportunity in Hong Kong.
Mm-hmm.
And then from there moved to Singapore. Uh, Mum as well. Um, I don't, I actually have no clue why she moved to Singapore. Um, but yeah, so they met, had me obviously, 2003, born there.
Yeah.
Grew up in the local school system there, so very, very-
Hefty, bro
... um, strict.
So different.
Oh. I left there what, year 6? Didn't have to study till year 10 here.
Wow. Okay.
Like m- math at, like, a young age there.
Yeah.
Um, science, all that stuff.
Yeah.
The only hard thing is, like, it's not English in the way that it's, like not being able to speak English-
Mm
... just the way they teach English is, like how you'd learn maths. I don't know how to explain it.
Like a second language English?
No, it's like, it's still first language.
Yeah.
Um, but the way they teach it is, like, for example, the exams are multiple choice. Like you fill-
Yeah, wow
... fill in blanks, punctuation, stuff like that.
Yeah.
Then you'd go write an

Without Blake in the chair this time, Jack Fryer turns the mic around and sits down with Jayden Francis for a conversation about his own story. In the chat they talk through Jayden's childhood growing up in Singapore, being diagnosed with thyroid cancer at just 14, and being on Mount Kinabalu with his Tanjong Katong Primary School group during the 2015 Sabah earthquake. They also unpack what it was like moving from Singapore to Perth, how those early experiences shaped the way he sees resilience and risk, and the highs and lessons of his entrepreneurial journey.
