What

L
Lockie0:01

a segue into having a podcast. You

BO
Blake O'Connell0:04

have another coffee? Of course.

L
Lockie0:06

I think you need to shut the door

BO
Blake O'Connell0:07

there, brother. We've got the door open. That's all right. Do we leave that open? I don't know what it sounds like. If you guys want

L
Lockie0:12

a good brekkie wrap,

BO
Blake O'Connell0:13

I know a spot

L
Lockie0:13

now.

BO
Blake O'Connell0:14

I've been having

L
Lockie0:15

too many.

BO
Blake O'Connell0:16

I would assume brekkie wraps are hard to do badly, though. Bacon, egg, barbecue sauce, something like that. It's never

L
Lockie0:22

bad. No, no, no. I'm not going to name it, but I'll bring it to you. Horrible. It's mostly, like, just sautéed spinach, this one,

BO
Blake O'Connell0:31

in my house. It's

L
Lockie0:32

horrible.

BO
Blake O'Connell0:33

Apologies, guys. We've got to talk about brekkie wraps, of all things. How can we segue brekkie wraps into podcast 10 with Julian Pace? Hi, guys. What's that? Can you do

J
Jack0:43

it? Yeah, well, brekkie reps make me quite happy. Yes.

BO
Blake O'Connell0:47

Oh,

J
Jack0:47

well

BO
Blake O'Connell0:48

done, Chris. Oh, that means very happy. All right, well, just for anyone here that you don't know who this guy is, you know, he's just joking. He's been away on his, he's been on a, you know, six-month deployment to Europe. It was a hard, hard

L
Lockie0:59

time. Hard time for him.

BO
Blake O'Connell1:01

So he's struggling to get back into the work. No, I'm back. So thanks, you're back. Do you want to give us your highlight? Give us your highlight, mate, because we're following you on social media. What's your highlight? Work appropriate. What was your best country?

J
Jack1:13

What did you like? Croatia was pretty cool. Yeah. Did you,

BO
Blake O'Connell1:15

the old

J
Jack1:16

city, Dubrovnik? Yeah, Dubrovnik was wicked. Looks cool, hey. Because Game of Thrones is filmed there. Yeah, it is.

BO
Blake O'Connell1:21

Yeah. Which is like the set for? King's Landing. King's Landing. I've never watched. What? Have you not? No. Have you seen the new season starters? Yeah. Have you been watching it? I haven't started watching it, yeah. Okay, sorry. We should put it – hopefully we're not trademarked. We're not in breach of any trademark here talking about a show. Great show. Just saying. Speaking of shows, our show. Yeah. All right? Julian Pace. Yeah. Really – I think for me, this is one of the probably most raw chats.

L
Lockie1:50

Oh, yeah.

BO
Blake O'Connell1:51

You know, like given the – given, I guess, the content, his experiences, right? And yeah, very, very deep. But I absolutely love this. Once again, it's just across the road from us as well, which is crazy. But I think Jules is an example of, you know, I use this, do you guys know what alchemy is? Do you guys know what the phrase or what the term alchemy is? I've heard the word, but I don't know what it means. What's that? Yeah.

L
Lockie2:21

It's like peace and serenity sort of.

BO
Blake O'Connell2:24

And

J
Jack2:24

maybe there might be a level two.

BO
Blake O'Connell2:25

So my example, how I probably best describe it is like alchemy is this thing back in the day where there was this like school of thought where people could take like things that are like base level, so like lead or something like that's not valuable and turn it into something valuable, i.e. gold. So there was like this scientific thought that people could do that back in the day. And that's hung around for thousands of years. Right. And the way I talk about it is analogous to that, right? So like Jules is an alchemist in a sense that he's had base experiences, awful experiences, right? Yeah. But he's got something precious out of it and he's turned it into gold

Episode notes

Blake and the team sit down to discuss the conversation with Julian Pace, their takeaways, key learns, as well as heading down a few philosophical rabbit holes. In the chat the team talk through how Julian turned profound personal loss into the mission behind Happiness Co, why he believes happiness is something you can build rather than wait for, and what speaking to more than 63,000 people across 10 countries has taught him about resilience and human connection. They also unpack his recent trek to the Everest and Annapurna base camps, which raised over $165k for charity, and how he balances an ambitious goal of positively impacting 10 million lives in 10 years with his role as a husband and dad.
