Hello and welcome to Locked On Red Sox, your daily Boston Red Sox podcast. I'm your host, Gabby Maljanian, and today's episode is brought to you by Kalshi. Disaster. 9-0 loss at Yankee Stadium. This was about as bad as it possibly could have gone. I talked on yesterday's show about how important Game 1 was going to be to this series. 15 out of 16 times that they've had this version of the wildcard series, the team that wins game one has gone on to win that series. And you know what the only time was that the game one winner didn't win a series was the Red Sox last year at Yankee Stadium. So the Red Sox are now one loss away from their season being over. And somehow a nine to nothing loss doesn't even completely describe how frustrating this game was. I am going to break it all down on today's show. How do you flush a loss like that? Roman Anthony's hand issue. And why was Peyton totally pulled? So words can't really express my anger at this team right now. The Red Sox lost a game that was very much within reach earlier on. They weren't down 9-0 when Peyton totally left the game or 5-0 or even 3-0. They were literally down 1-0. He had thrown 83 pitches and allowed just one run. And Chad Tracy took the baseball away from him. And then by the time this thing ended... Absolute nightmare. Nine runs, 12 Yankees hits to three Red Sox hits. Ben Rice drove in six runs by himself. Cam Schlittler struck out 10. And to make an already miserable night potentially a lot worse, Roman Anthony left the game with another issue involving his hand. So, yeah. Absolutely miserable night. But I want to start with the decision that every Red Sox fan is going to be talking about today. Why was Peyton totally taken out of this game? Now let's establish something right off the gate. I didn't have high expectations for this team to hit against Kim Schlittler. I was not expecting it. They have not showed that they're capable of hitting good pitching as of late. And Kim Schlittler in his career has mowed down the Red Sox. And he did it once again in last night's game. So that performance to me came to no surprise. Red Sox offense didn't show up once again. Peyton Tolley was not the reason the Red Sox lost this game, not even close, and that's probably the most frustrating part. He threw four and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits, one earned run with four strikeouts, One walk, 83 pitches, 58 strikes, which is a 69.9% strike rate. So let's just call that 70% strikes that he threw. He wasn't spraying the baseball everywhere and he wasn't at 105 pitches, wasn't getting shelled and he wasn't laboring through every inning. I mean, it wasn't his most effective outing, but he was fine. The Red Sox

Episode notes

The Boston Red Sox unravel in a 9-0 playoff disaster at Yankee Stadium as Chad Tracy’s controversial decision to pull Payton Tolle at just 83 pitches shifts the series momentum. Can the Red Sox recover after offensive woes and a bullpen collapse, especially with postseason fate hanging in the balance?

Gabby Maljanian breaks down Tolle’s early exit, the crucial Ben Rice grand slam, and the possible impact of Roman Anthony’s recurring hand injury on Boston’s outfield depth. Key topics include the Yankees’ dominance behind Cam Schlittler’s 10-strikeout performance, Tracy’s over-management vs. Aaron Boone’s trust in his ace, and the looming challenge against Max Fried. With their season on the line, will the Red Sox bounce back and force a decisive Game 3, or will history repeat itself in the Bronx?
