[upbeat music] My goal is still to just be that Swiss army knife of you can call on me and I can go three innings, uh, or if you need me to come in and get one out, um, I'm really just here for the team and whatever kind of role they, they need me to be in at that moment.

Hello, and welcome to Locked On Red Sox, your daily Boston Red Sox podcast. I'm your host, Gabby Maljanian, and today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Get $350 in bonus bets guaranteed when you bet $5 every day for seven days. Join all of the action at fanduel.com. Happy Wednesday. Welcome to the show. Tanner Houck had a rehab outing in Worcester last night. I was there covering it. He looked really good. One inning, three strikeouts, one walk, and he felt very good after the outing. So on today's show, you're gonna be hearing from Tanner directly about his rehab, how things are going, how he's feeling, and what he hopes to get out of these next few days as the plan for him is to pitch again on Saturday, about 50 pitches. He threw 22 pitches, 11 strikes in the outing last night, and topped out at 94.2 miles per hour on his fastball. So I definitely have no concerns about it. And again, sorry to be dropping the episode late today, but I got back from Worcester really late last night and had to catch up on the Red Sox, so here we are. But you're gonna be hearing from Tanner, and he was asked, you know, "How do you feel right now, and how did you feel tonight compared to your two rehab outings that you made in Portland last week?"

[upbeat music] Definitely more in sync. Definitely, um, just continuing to get game reps under the belt, uh, is a great step forward of, you know, making a comeback. Um, this is kind of my spring training time, uh, if you wanna look at it that way. So, uh, every chance I'm out there, I'm just looking to compete, looking to maximize every outing the best I can. So, uh, today was a good step in the right direction. Um, a lot of good swing and miss, uh, and just overall just happy with, you know, going out there and being healthy

Episode notes

The Boston Red Sox eye a bullpen boost as Tanner Houck eyes a return in time for a playoff push. After an impressive rehab outing in Worcester—striking out three and topping out at 94.2 mph—Houck shares how his recovery mindset, sharpened mental toughness, and versatility could fill the high-leverage gap left by Justin Slaten’s season-ending injury. Is Houck’s “Swiss Army knife” mentality exactly what the Red Sox bullpen needs down the stretch?

Gabby Maljanian recaps Houck’s rehab journey, from refining his splitter and changeup to adjusting his workload ahead of a potential activation. Discussions center around Houck’s progress through live game action, his evolving role from starter to multi-inning reliever, and the crucial importance of player health management. Don’t miss Houck’s candid insights on overcoming adversity and what it means for Boston’s postseason ambitions.
