Hello and welcome to Lockdown Red Sox, your daily Boston Red Sox podcast. I'm your host, Gabby Maljanian. And well, last night's game didn't exactly go as planned for the Boston Red Sox. Going to be talking a little bit about the concerns with pitching depth. Mickey Gasper needs to stay and some good news on Garrett Crochet. So obviously last night was not ideal after an electric win on Monday in which the Red Sox won the game in 10 innings on an electric walk-off. Thanks to Trevor Story and Roman Anthony, who both were big contributors in that win. Really nice to have those two back. Electric energy, vibes were high, and then they go into last night's game, and they just get absolutely destroyed in the first couple innings. And the Red Sox were supposed to have Sonny Gray start that game, but then they pushed him back and basically are having him miss this start. They didn't just push him back, meaning he's going to pitch today only. or tomorrow. He's just skipping the start altogether. And we'll pitch another five days from now, which would put him at over the weekend in Baltimore because he felt like he needed more time. So rather than just pushing somebody else up on short rest, the Red Sox decided to call up a pitcher from AAA Worcester and Jettickson Pius, who had been pitching very well for the Woo Sox since being called up from AAA. So the Red Sox figured, Why not give him a shot? But it ended up being a complete nightmare for him and definitely not ideal. And it felt like he was on his own out there because it was his Red Sox debut and his major league debut as a starter. He had made an appearance in relief before. But as a starter, he had never pitched in the majors. And obviously, on top of that, his Boston Red Sox debut. So... he wasn't used to the environment that Fenway brings. And the environment was rough. People were booing him early on in this game. And I felt badly for him because the Red Sox just kept him out there because they needed to get whatever they could get from him before they absolutely had to

Episode notes

The Boston Red Sox face pressing questions about long-term pitching depth after a brutal outing by rookie Jedixson Páez, who was left stranded on the mound as Seattle Mariners’ bats erupted. With Sonny Gray skipping a start for extra rest and key arms like Garrett Crochet and Johan Oviedo still sidelined, can Alex Cora’s squad afford more experiments with their rotation as October looms?

Gabby Maljanian breaks down the ripple effects of these pitching decisions, praises Mickey Gasper’s historic offensive tear, and shares the latest positive updates on Garrett Crochet’s rehab. Discussion spotlights the Red Sox bullpen’s workload, the management of fatigue, and where breakout stars fit as the roster gets healthier. With playoff hopes heating up, is it time to worry about depth, or are key reinforcements just in time for a postseason push?
