The Red Sox just lost a series at Fenway to a team that is 56-90. Am I panicking? Absolutely not. But there is something that happened in this series that Boston needs to fix before October.

Hello and welcome to Lockdown Red Sox, your daily Boston Red Sox podcast. I'm your host, Gabby Maljanian. Happy Friday. Welcome in to another episode here. The Red Sox had an off day yesterday and they really needed it. because they had a really weird three-game series against the Angels. The Red Sox came home after sweeping four games in Baltimore, won the opener against the Angels, which gave them five straight wins, and everything felt great because that gave them momentum. And then you drop the next two to an Angels team that came into the series as one of the worst teams in baseball. So today I'm going to figure out what exactly we should be taking away from that because I don't want to do the thing where we freak out over two losses in September, but I also don't want to just shrug my shoulders and say, oh, well, it's part of baseball. There were a couple things in this series that I think actually matter. So on today's show, dissecting the Angels series, signs of life offensively, potentially, who can start for the Red Sox? And no excuses at this point because we are now in September and games matter and series matter. And the reality is that losing this series was worse than it looks. I don't want people to lose sight of this because sometimes we do lose sight of certain things when we're watching a 162-game season. You're allowed to say that a series was bad without declaring that the entire season is falling apart. And this is an example of that. This was a bad series for the Red Sox. It just is what it was. There's not really another way to describe it. They didn't play well. The Angels left Fenway at 56-90, the Red Sox at 80-67. The Angels had won just two of its previous 14 games entering Tuesday night, and somehow the Red Sox became the team that gave them consecutive wins for the first time since the middle of August, which isn't good, especially because the Red Sox had a chance to build some serious momentum in this series, and that's the part that's the biggest concern. If you think about how this stretch started, going into Baltimore, a four-game sweep, Monday against the Angels winning 5-2 was also huge. Jaron Duran hit his 20th home run of the season that day. Adley Rutschman hit a giant three-run homer. Brian Bayo gave them five

Episode notes

The Boston Red Sox squander a golden opportunity, dropping a home series to the struggling Los Angeles Angels and raising critical questions as the playoff race heats up. Can their pitching staff regroup, or will September setbacks signal early October trouble?

Gabby Maljanian breaks down the Red Sox’s missteps at Fenway, spotlighting Jake Bennett and Patrick Sandoval’s shaky outings, Brayan Bello's resurgence, and why pitching depth may be Boston’s Achilles’ heel. Key discussion points include Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu’s clutch homers, troubling strikeout trends, and looming injuries to Willson Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela. With key reinforcements on the horizon and playoff spots on the line, can the Red Sox find the consistency needed to make a postseason run?
