Welcome back to Dreaming Against the Machine. I'm your host, Adam Becker. Normally on this show, I have a guest or guests and we have a conversation, but this week's a little bit different. University College London asked me to talk with them. And in particular, their science and technology studies department picks a book every year to have the whole department read. And this year, that book was my most recent book, More Everything Forever. And so they asked me to talk with them about that book. And so I did an event with them over Zoom and it went really well. And my producer, Nick, and I decided that it would actually make a really good episode of this podcast. So in a sense, this week's guest is me. And you'll hear me talking with Jack Stilgo, who is a professor in the UCL STS department. I think it's a really great conversation and you're going to enjoy it. So here we go.

Adam, just by way of introduction, I should just say that we here in the Science and Technology Studies Department at University College London have a tradition where every year we choose what we call a one book, which is the book that we think... has been published recently that will appeal across all of our department. And we are a department of historians, philosophers, sociologists, science communicators, policy wonks. So finding the books that speak to all of us is not easy. We were delighted to choose yours this year, and we have been reading it. Here is my well-thumbed, well-annotated copy. But don't be intimidated. This is not a viva. But yeah, we've been so pleased to read your book, not just because it's packed full of ideas and it's relevant to debates in the

Episode notes

This week is a reversal: Adam is interviewed by Jack Stilgoe, professor of science and technology studies at University College London. Jack and his colleagues ask Adam about how he came to write his most recent book, what the process of writing it was like, and how things have changed since he wrote it.

About the show:

Dreaming Against the Machine is a podcast about envisioning a realistic and hopeful future. Each week, the show’s host, journalist and astrophysicist Dr. Adam Becker, will have an earnest (and entertaining!) conversation with a guest about possible futures, seen through the lenses of history, science, and culture. In a world where tech oligarchs and their power fantasies are driving visions of the future, Dreaming Against the Machine aims to take back the terms of the public conversation about what our world can and should be.
