[upbeat music] Welcome back to Dreaming Against the Machine. I'm your host, Adam Becker. This week, it's just me. You know, we've got plenty of guests booked up for future weeks. It's gonna be fun. We're gonna have some good conversations. But this time, we're trying something a little bit different. I think we're gonna start doing the occasional solo episode. So this is a little bit of an experiment, and we're gonna see how it goes. But first of all, before I get started in earnest, I just wanna say, uh, you know, we started this podcast, what, a few months ago now. Oh, God, I guess the first episode came out in April. As I'm recording this, it's September, so that's about five months ago we started-ish, four or five months. And, you know, we prepped for it for longer than that. You know, really started working on this in earnest around the beginning of this year. And if you told me then that we would be here now, that, you know, we'd be a few months in, that we would have put out an episode every single week without fail, that we would have thousands of people downloading it every single week, that we would have, you know, a bunch of really loyal supporters on Patreon, and that we'd be part of this amazing podcast collective, um, I don't know if I would have believed that that could have all happened as quickly as it has. Uh, I've been really completely [chuckles] bowled over by the support for this show that you all have shown, uh, the listeners. Yeah, I'm very happy about it, and I'm honestly very humbled by it. Everyone on this team, and, like, Nick, my producer, is listening to me as I say this right now, and I'm sure he is just nodding along and is probably gonna turn on his camera in a second and, like, give me that face he gives me. But, like, everyone involved with the production of this show from the beginning, you know, Nick, the team at Multitude, um, our former associate producer, Rosie, uh, who is still a dear friend of the show, uh, everybody, all of the guests, everybody believed in this more than I did. Everybody was like, "Yeah, of course this is gonna go well, Adam. Of course this is gonna be good." And I was like, "I, I, I don't know." And, like, you know, and that was not false modesty

Episode notes

This week it's just Adam! Following up on the space colonization episode from a few weeks back, Adam talks about exactly how horrifying and difficult it would be to live permanently in deep space. He also answers a couple of listener questions, talks a bit about the show itself, and reveals a special surprise for our Patreon supporters.

About the show:

Dreaming Against the Machine is a podcast about envisioning a realistic and hopeful future. Each week, the show’s host, journalist and astrophysicist Dr. Adam Becker, will have an earnest (and entertaining!) conversation with a guest about possible futures, seen through the lenses of history, science, and culture. In a world where tech oligarchs and their power fantasies are driving visions of the future, Dreaming Against the Machine aims to take back the terms of the public conversation about what our world can and should be.
