Welcome to the Sales Made Simple podcast. This podcast is dedicated to
helping overwhelmed outdoor living professionals, landscapers, and hardscapers just like you increase your closing rate to over 75% without doubling your workload so you can build a seven-figure business that doesn't need you. I'm your host, Joshua Gillow. Let's dig in. Hey everybody, welcome back to the podcast. This is your host Joshua Gillow. This week I have Jonathan Carpenter on. Jonathan Carpenter is a wealth planner and he works with capital planning. And he and his team have profoundly impacted my life. About 12 years ago we met and my wife and I were trying to figure out what the future looked like for our kids and college savings and retirement and we had really no idea what to do. We just knew that After all the work that we've done through our businesses and everything, we didn't want to end up looking at each other at 65 or 70 years old and say, now what? Like, I wish we would have planned earlier. So meeting with Jonathan and his team really changed the way we looked at how we structured these last 12 years. And I have to say, the structure that we put in place has made such a huge difference in our life and has given us the freedom that we originally started our businesses for. So before I give too much away from this podcast, Jonathan, welcome to the show. Thank you, Josh. It's great to be here. Yeah, Jonathan. So like I'd said, I mean, you do what you do. I do what I do, right? We build backyards. You plan people's futures when it comes to financial success and freedom. And what I didn't realize before I met you is that there's an actual process in place, right? At first, before there's a process in how to do this and how to invest and how to do it well and right, we need to start thinking about you know, what does it even look like to start planning for this? I know as a contractor, most of my life is my 30th year, you know, in the outdoor living world. And so often we're going job to job and thinking that one day we'll have enough money to retire on, or one day we'll be able to travel more. One day we'll be able to do things that we wish we would do or be able to do now. And I realized in that moment, 12 years ago, making that decision that if I don't start now, I'm going to end up wishing I did. And I keep hearing over and over this idea that, you know, when it comes to compounding interest being the eighth wonder of the world. And so with that, you need time, right? We need time. So the more time we possibly have, the more we can do. So what does retirement look like, you know, when it comes down to it? Why should we start now and not after the next big job? Speaking specifically to contractors who've got their hands in the dirt and just working their tails off. Like, why now? Why not later?
Well, there's always gonna be the next job. There's always gonna be the next bid. And just like

Are you building a successful contracting business but still have no clear idea how that business will give you the freedom to stop working someday?
Contractors are used to trading their time, skills, and physical effort for money. But building a business is supposed to create more than another job. It should ultimately give you the freedom to choose how you spend your time, where you spend it, and how much work you actually need to take on.
The problem is that many contractors keep waiting for the next big project, the next profitable year, or the point when they finally have "enough" money to start investing. In this episode, Joshua Gillow talks with wealth planner Jonathan Carpenter about why waiting can be one of the most expensive decisions you make, how compound growth rewards those who start early, and how a simple automated investment strategy can turn today's business income into tomorrow's financial freedom.
You will:
- Understand why starting with a small amount today can be more powerful than waiting until you have significantly more money to invest.
- Learn how contractors can find additional cash flow by understanding their business expenses, cutting what doesn't create value, and intentionally allocating money toward their future.
- Discover how creating a financial plan can give you
