I'm your host, Joshua Gillow. Let's dig in. Hey everybody, welcome back to the show. This week I have Tanner Broughton on. He's coming back to us from Hardscape Paradise, an incredible event down in Cancun with the blessing of being part of last year. So I know he's been on another episode. This time I'm going to go a little deeper. We're going to pull back the veil a bit and get a little bit deeper into Tanner the man, like what drives him and and how he balances life and all that kind of stuff because i know each and every one of us throughout this thing we call business this time we're doing this is we're always trying to keep this this balance like more time am i spending enough time my family am i spending too much time in the business am i spending not enough time there um with my guys and like really trying to get that dialed in so tanner welcome back to the show
hey thanks for having me appreciate you being here and uh I guess, blessed to be on the show. Absolutely, man.
Well, I'm definitely glad to have you back and have this conversation because, you know, a lot of times as men in business, we, you know, we act like everything is great. And it's like, you know, we're just like, ah, well, you look around like, well, they're building bigger projects than me. They're busier than I am. I must be doing something wrong. And like, all that is heavy. It can be heavy, right? Or I'm not as busy as I think I should be. Or my wife's driving me crazy because I should be home with the kids more. Like there's always something that's going on. It's always dragging you back. So what I want to dig into you or with you today is more of a question on, you know, as a business owner, we have to be a little crazy, right? We have to be
a little nuts because,
you know, most people get a nine to five job and they have the security around that and they can have their weekends off. And then when they leave at five o'clock, they can just shut it off. And when they get back at nine, they can turn it on. Like we choose, And the opposite of that, like it never stops. It's always coming. You never know what's around the next corner. It is a street fight every day. So my question for you, Tanner, is what drives you to keep coming back to this to this game we call business?
Yeah. So I guess this is my eighth year in business. And when I first started it, it was, it was actually, it was a little bit for my parents. I'm not, I don't come from a family of entrepreneurs, at least my parents. I do have some uncles that are entrepreneurs, but I almost needed their grace to, to start my business. And from there, it was just, you know, passion. I

What if the very thing that made you a great business owner is standing in the way of you becoming a great leader?
In this episode, Joshua Gillow reconnects with Tanner Broughton of Firescapes and founder of Hardscape Paradise, for a deeper, more personal conversation than their first sit-down. They dig into the real balancing act of running a business while showing up for a marriage and young kids, the threshold moments that forced Tanner to grow, and the humbling shift every founder eventually faces: learning to let your team outshine you. Tanner also opens up about the highs and stress of launching an international event from scratch, and shares what's new for Hardscape Paradise 2027 in Cancun.
You'll learn:
- How becoming a father reshaped Tanner's patience, empathy, and leadership, and why kids can teach business owners lessons no employee ever could.
- The four-tier mindset shift needed to grow from "the guy who does it all" to a leader who fans the flames of his team's talent, even when they start outperforming him.
- What it really took behind the scenes to launch Hardscape Paradise, from a stress-induced sick night before the first event to the early bird sign-ups already rolling in for 2027.
