If you spend much time on social media, particularly in some of the hairdressing industry groups, you could be forgiven for thinking that it's all doom and gloom in the industry. But it isn't. There's no shortage of people talking about rising costs, staffing problems, declining profitability, and just how difficult it is to run a salon these days. And I get it. The reality is that many of those challenges are very real. But it's not the full picture. Because the picture I see through the coaching work I do with salon owners around the world is often very different from the picture being painted on social media. I get to work with some fantastic businesses. Businesses that are profitable, growing, developing great teams and providing their owners with a wonderful lifestyle. And it seems to me that we don't hear nearly enough about them. I'm Anthony Whittaker and welcome to this week's episode of the Grow My Salon Business Podcast. A few weeks ago, I was talking to a new coaching client. And when I asked her what she wanted to get out of coaching, she said something that rarely resonated with me. She said, I'm sick of how much negativity there is around the hairdressing industry. There's so much doom and gloom. And I knew exactly what she meant because it's something that I've been thinking about for a while. Now, I'm not suggesting that the challenges facing our industry aren't real. The rising costs of running a business, the difficulties of recruiting and retaining staff, increases in wages, taxes and inventory costs constantly going up. Changing client behavior and shrinking profit margins are all very real issues. I know that. And depending on where you are in the world, there are plenty of other challenges that you could add to that list because it does vary from country to country. Now, I've owned salons and I know firsthand just how difficult running a business can be. And through the coaching work that I do today, I regularly talk to salon owners who are dealing with some incredibly challenging situations. For some, it is a constant struggle to make ends meet. For others, it's the pressure of managing people, keeping clients happy and trying to find some sort of balance between their business and their personal life. So I'm certainly not suggesting that we should put on a happy face and pretend that everything is wonderful when it isn't. But I do think that there's a difference between acknowledging the challenges we face and allowing those challenges to dominate our thinking. And sometimes I wonder whether all the negativity we see on social media has just become a little bit more clickbait. After all, bad news attracts attention. People respond to it, comment on it, and they share it. And before you know it, you can find yourself surrounded by a seemingly endless stream of stories about what's going wrong. The problem is that when all we hear about is what's going wrong, it's very easy to start believing that everything is going wrong. And it isn't. There are plenty of salon owners who are building successful businesses, developing great teams. creating wonderful experience for their clients and enjoying the rewards of their hard
2Episode notes
Spend any time in hairdressing groups on social media, and you could believe a successful salon business is almost impossible today. Rising costs, staffing problems and shrinking margins are real. But some of the salons I work with tell a very different story. These are profitable businesses with great teams, run by owners who have a life outside the salon. We just don't hear enough about them, and I think it's time we did.
Today's episode will give you a fresh perspective on your own business, a clearer idea of what success means to you, and the foundations that help a salon hold firm when the economy slows.
