Welcome to the Jazz Notes Podcast. I'm Ben
Anderson. I'm Chandler Holt.
We are recording this on August 24th, a little more than a month away from Utah Jazz Media Day, which I haven't seen the exact date on, but usually it's on a Monday, and usually it's like the last Monday of September. We'll be right back. Until then, as always, we will wrap up the show with our mailbag at Ben's Hoops at Seaholt Sports is where you can find us on social media. I said I was going to put it on blue sky and I did not. I'll do that right now and see if we get any very late questions. Apologies there. But we like to start with news and notes. And there actually is a little bit of news with the Jazz, a non-trade trade that you broke down that I thought was interesting. Because when I read it, I thought, oh, Jazz traded Mo Bamba. And then I had to realize, oh, no, they did not. You had a good explainer.
Yeah, so this trade went down on August 20th, which was last Thursday. Basically, in the NBA G League, there was a massive six-team trade. I'm not going to break down all of the 500 names that are in this, but I'll just do in and out for the SLC stars. They sent out Sean East and Mo Bamba to the Stockton Kings. They sent Trey Townsend and Darion Sebron to the Greensboro Swarm. I believe that's it for the out trade. And for the in, they brought in Terrell Brown from Greensboro and Jonas Aydoo, who was with the Jazz's summer league team from Greensboro as well. So, yes, you see in this, oh, Mo Bamba's traded to the Kings. Does that mean he's a member of the Sacramento Kings now?
Which would open up a spot for the Jazz's roster.
Yes, but no. Basically, if you go a level deeper, they traded his returning rights, which basically means the fact that he is signed to an NBA contract right now voids this trade meaning anything, right? Yeah. It means
the trade is allowed to go through, but he's not moved.
Yes, it's almost like a draft and stash in a weird way, using the G League. If Mo Bamba was to be waived or cut or whatever it is, no longer under an NBA contract, then he would be a member of the Stockton Kings as a standard G League player. However, the NBA contract is like a... has the upper hand in this, and he's still a member of the Jazz. Interestingly, he can also be assigned to the Stars in the season. It just requires consent from both him and the NBPA.
It's kind of like in baseball when you make a trade and there's a player to be named later. He's essentially already designated as the player to be named later if he gets waived by the Utah Jazz. And again, why this matters is... He's on a partially guaranteed contract, but it is a traditional NBA contract at the
