All right, we're back. We're playing Shoot Your Shot, where we take founders and business owners from the audience who get to sit in this chair right here, pitch us their business. We have founders all the way from a million bucks to $100 million businesses. So let's do it. Let's bring out the next founder. [clapping]

SP
Sam Parr0:15

What's up, dude?

SP
Shaan Puri0:15

He's styling. [laughs]

SP
Sam Parr0:16

Dude. [laughs]

SP
Shaan Puri0:18

First leather jacket on the pod. What's your name?

RT
Rishi Talati0:21

Yeah. I'm Rishi. I'm one of the founders of Hotplate, and we powered over $100 million of sales for independent food entrepreneurs.

SP
Sam Parr0:27

Okay.

SP
Shaan Puri0:28

So the big number's $100 million in sales.

RT
Rishi Talati0:29

Yeah.

SP
Shaan Puri0:30

Unpack that. Un- what does that mean?

RT
Rishi Talati0:31

Totally. So Hotplate is a platform that lets anybody sell food online. We work with, like, I, we work with, like, small pop-up bakers that, like, sell food at their house, all the way to, like, this guy who's an ice cream maker in Minnesota.

SP
Shaan Puri0:42

Have you seen this? It's Airbnb for food type of thing, right?

RT
Rishi Talati0:44

Type of thing.

SP
Shaan Puri0:44

Awesome.

RT
Rishi Talati0:44

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we're starting right now as a tool that lets a seller who has, like, an Instagram following sell food directly to their audience. A lot of times those sellers are using, like s- you know, spreadsheets, Venmo, DMs, like, a hodgepodge of tools, or they're using a platform like Squareshop. It just isn't built for, like, pre-order.

SP
Sam Parr1:00

But will they stay small? Is it, like, for the person who wants to stay as a small business?

RT
Rishi Talati1:04

It's a really good question. So a lot of people think that, like, oh, you guys just work with, like, really tiny pop-ups that eventually go to a brick-and-mortar. We actually have tons of six or seven-figure businesses that are doing drops and selling food directly to their audience.

SP
Shaan Puri1:14

That's sick. I bought this, uh, there's this dude who's real jacked, he's like a bodybuilder, who does these cookies.

SP
Sam Parr1:19

I'm in.

SP
Shaan Puri1:19

You've seen this? [laughs]

SP
Sam Parr1:21

I'm in. [laughs]

SP
Shaan Puri1:21

Yeah, I know this-

SP
Sam Parr1:21

You talked about him, like, four years ago.

SP
Shaan Puri1:22

Yeah, but he, he s- he does these drops of, like-

RT
Rishi Talati1:24

Yeah

SP
Shaan Puri1:25

... cheat meal cookies.

RT
Rishi Talati1:26

Yeah.

SP
Shaan Puri1:26

They're insanely-

RT
Rishi Talati1:27

Totally

SP
Shaan Puri1:27

... huge. Way over the top. But, like, he sells out in seconds-

RT
Rishi Talati1:30

Seconds

SP
Shaan Puri1:30

... and it's all just through his Instagram-

RT
Rishi Talati1:32

Absolutely

SP
Shaan Puri1:32

... presence, 'cause he builds up a lot of trust. So first of all, Hotplate.

RT
Rishi Talati1:36

Hotplate, yeah.

SP
Shaan Puri1:36

Incredible name.

RT
Rishi Talati1:37

Thank you.

SP
Sam Parr1:37

And this was totally, like, a COVID thing a little bit. I remember, like-

RT
Rishi Talati1:40

100%, yeah

SP
Sam Parr1:41

... you, have you heard of Pop Up Bagels?

SP
Shaan Puri1:42

Yeah.

RT
Rishi Talati1:42

So actually, we powered Pop Up Bagels.

SP
Sam Parr1:44

Oh, really?

RT
Rishi Talati1:44

Yeah, yeah.

SP
Sam Parr1:44

Like, listen to this. So Pop Up Bagels was, uh, they actually started in Westwood, Connecticut-

SP
Shaan Puri1:48

Saw it in New York, but I didn't-

RT
Rishi Talati1:48

Yeah, yeah

SP
Sam Parr1:48

... where I used to live.

SP
Shaan Puri1:48

Yeah.

SP
Sam Parr1:49

And there was a bunch of companies that did this, where it was, like, a husband and wife couple were like, "I'm gonna make this and sell it in my apartment, and we'll drop it out of the windows when-

SP
Shaan Puri1:55

Yep

SP
Sam Parr1:55

... people come," and whatever. And these guys did-

SP
Shaan Puri1:57

Oh, 'cause COVID made it like-

SP
Sam Parr1:58

Yeah

SP
Shaan Puri1:58

... hey, just do a weird pickup on the curb.

SP
Sam Parr2:00

Like, oh, we're sitting at home, let's just make food-

SP
Shaan Puri2:01

Yeah

SP
Sam Parr2:01

... and then we'll do... And so these guys did that with bagels, and they, like, you had to have an appointment, and you could only get it by the dozen. And now they've since raised a lot
