404 turns · 1 hr 28 minI had this experience of I am one with everything, and everything is good. It was like getting [beep] hooked to, on heroin.
[laughs]
I was like, "Whatever the [beep] that is, I'm obsessed."
[singing] I feel like I could rule the world. I know I could be what I want to. Uh. I put my all in it like no days off. On the road less traveled, never looking back.
I'm excited to have you here, Joe. Welcome to the podcast. I don't know if you know kind of what this podcast is all about, but basically the people who listen to this podcast are very much like me and Sam. We're business junkies, we're s- we're entrepreneurs, we're sort of perpetually always starting things, but also students of the game, always trying to learn. You've done many things. You started... Your life story in 10 seconds was ki- kind of like a kind of punk rock kid to discovering a, an entire area of wisdom to go work in. You've been in the business world as a VC, and now you coach some of the highest level players of the game. You are one of the coaches to some of the top, uh, CEOs and entrepreneurs in the game, including Sam Altman and some other friends that we've, we, we were talking about before we started.
Yeah.
And so we're really excited to have you here.
Are you able to name drop at all? Can we give you, like, 10 seconds just to brag?
The names that I can drop are the ones that are on the website. It, I find that it's better if you all name drop for me than me name drop.
Oh, got it.
We've seen Mark Pincus. We've seen Sam Altman. We've seen Eric Tornberg. Ev Williams, I think.
Ev. Ev. Ev is a good one, yeah. Um, Stacy, Phil Pot, Brown, she was a head of Google India and ran TaskRabbit.
Is your specialty, like, type A high achievers that just need a little bit of help? Like, how do you summarize the, um, you're starting here and you end up here?
Uh, no. I, I l- I really like to have a variety of people, you know? Like, all sorts of people. The only thing that I think all of, all the people that I work with have in common is they're ambitious. Uh, only some of them are maximalists, but they're all super ambitious.
What's a maximalist?
I don't even know what that is. Yeah, what, what's maximalist? [laughs]
Maximalist is someone who's like, "I want it all right now, and I can get it all right now." I would put, like, Sam Altman in the maximalist category. Any limitation that a normal person would see, they're just like, "No, we can figure out how to do both."
Is that achievable?
No, I don't think it's achievable entirely, but I think that much more is achievable if you think that way, right? So the limitation, like limiting beliefs are, like, hold us back dramatically.
Let me ask you a question about limiting beliefs. I had never heard this phrase till I went to a Tony Robbins event, and then he started explaining it, and I started... Now, then I started seeing it everywhere in myself and my, my family members, different people, where pe- we tell ourselves these stories. Can you, can you talk a little bit about this, 'cause I think it's pretty universal.
The, yeah, the idea of a limiting belief outwardly is just any thought process that you have holding you back, and so I'll give you, uh, a one
