flow. A company can have strong sales, great customers, and even appear profitable on paper. But if customers aren't paying on time, that money isn't available to run and grow the business. So here's today's important question. What if some of the cash your business needs is already sitting in your customer's account? Today, I'm joined by Bill Ferrier, Founder of Ready, Set, Collect, with nearly 40 years of experience in the credit and collection industry, Bill helps companies improve cash flow, reduce day sales outstanding, strengthen their collection processes, and train their team to get paid more effectively while preserving customers' relationships. In today's conversation, we explore cash flow, collection, customers' relationships, payment, payment objection, working capital, profitability, and the importance of getting paid first. Bill, welcome to Telling My Story. It's a pleasure to have you here with us today.

All right, Bill, let's start with your journey. How did you spend nearly 40 years working in credit and collection, and what inspired you to focus on helping businesses improve their cash flow?

Well, I started in collections back in 1982, and I started with a company called Dun & Bradstreet. At the time, they were the largest credit reporting agent company globally, and they had a collection department, a commercial collection department. And I had done a little bit of collections prior to that, not much, but then I saw this opportunity and I started with them. And my career just kind of grew along with my skill sets and ability. And I just found that I really enjoyed collections. I didn't find it adversarial. I didn't find it difficult. I just thought to myself that, you know, companies have been sold a product and they have to pay. That's just the way it is. That's kind of sort of how I kind of fell into it, if you will.

Okay. That's really insightful. So what have you learned from working with businesses over the years?

What I've learned is basically that a lot of companies don't put a lot of emphasis on collections. They basically develop their sales team. You know, they'll send them on sales seminars and they'll do retreats and they'll do all this kind of stuff, which is great. I'm not taking anything away from it. You've got to develop your sales team. Absolutely. But at the same time, a lot of these companies don't put those same energies and resources into developing the back end of the business, which is collections. And when I do my collection workshops and seminars, I talk about the business cycle and what's all included. And you can have the best sales, the best product and what have you. But if you're not collecting on your accounts receivable in a timely manner, you may as well be giving that product or

Episode notes

What if the cash your business needs isn't sitting in the bank—but is already sitting in your customers' accounts?

In this episode of Telling My Story, I sit down with Bill Ferrier, founder of Ready Set Collect and a credit and collections professional with nearly 40 years of experience, to discuss one of the most important yet often overlooked areas of business: cash flow and accounts receivable.

Bill explains why businesses can struggle financially even when they are profitable, how overdue invoices can tie up valuable working capital, and why improving your collection process can have a significant impact on cash flow and Days Sales Outstanding (DSO).

We explore how companies can train their in-house collection teams to overcome payment objections, recognize early warning signs, ask better questions, and get customers to pay without damaging valuable relationships.

Bill also shares practical strategies for dealing with difficult accounts, improving collection conversations, and turning collections from an uncomfortable business function into a profitability and cash-flow opportunity.

Whether you're a business owner, entrepreneur, finance professional, sales leader, or anyone responsible for getting customers to pay on time, this conversation provides practical lessons you can apply to strengthen your business.
