34 turns · 24 minHello, everyone, and welcome to another inspiring episode of Telling My Story, the podcast where we uncover the journeys behind remarkable people and discover the lessons that inspire personal growth, leadership, resilience, and purpose. I'm your host, Henry Chivetle, and today's conversation explore a question that many successful people quietly ask themselves, "I have built the life I was supposed to want, so why doesn't it feel the way I thought it would?" Success is often presented as the destination, but what happens when achieving your goals doesn't automatically bring happiness, fulfillment, or peace you expected? Today, I'm joined by Shante Alexander, an organizational psychologist, executive coach, speaker, and author of The Emotional Cost of Clarity. Shante's work explores the psychology behind performance, identity, ambition, and becoming. She helps high achievers understand the, the identities and expectation they have developed, and recognize when the very qualities that help them succeed may also be keeping them stuck. Today, we're going to talk about success, identity, ambition, burnout, leadership, boundaries, and what it really means to become who you are beyond the roles you have learned to play. Shante, welcome to Telling My Story. It's a pleasure to have you here with us today.
Thank you so much. Thank you for having me.
All right, Shante, every meaningful journey has a story behind it. What experience led you to become interested in psychology of success, identity, and ambition?
Well, I've always been, um, interested in psychology, so I started, uh, that process maybe about 20 years ago in my undergrad work. But what really got me to this point was, uh, traumatic, well, not traumatic, but it, a sudden change. Uh, my marriage ended suddenly last year, and so I wasn't quite prepared [chuckles] for that, but I appreciated it because it gave me the space to be able to sit down and say, "How did I get to this point? What have I been doing that got me here, and what needs to stop?" So that was the last, this last year has been that process, and I, um... The book that I wrote, The Emotional Cost of Clarity, is literally that process, chapter by chapter, of understanding myself and why I showed up the way I showed up, not just in my personal life, but in my professional life, too. Those patterns, those qualities, and things like that that I had but wasn't always serving me fully because of the way I was using them. So last year was really the, the process of really identifying these.
Sorry about your marriage.
Thank you.
All right. So when did you realize success had an emotional side?
Last year. [chuckles] Last year when I realized a lot of the things I wanted, a lot of the things I was going after, were a lot of things that I was told even to want, or, you know, daydreamed about, like fairy tales kind of when I was younger. And when you recognize how you got to your success, when you recognize what it cost you, the things that you may value, time with your family, well-being, taking care of your own self, and just being able to connect with friends and things that you just love, those are usually some of the things that you, that you
