[upbeat music] Recommendations can be great. Maybe someone recommended this podcast, and here you are. But home projects are a little different. If the podcast isn't your thing, you might lose a few minutes from your day. But if you hire your cousin's neighbor to mount your TV, you might end up with a lopsided screen and wall damage. "I know a guy," isn't a good strategy for your home. That's why Thumbtack works so well. It matches you with top-rated local pros with photos, reviews, and credentials all in one convenient place. For your next home project, try Thumbtack. Hire the right pro today.

[upbeat music] Heinz is inseparable from both football and the city of Pittsburgh. It's an iconic staple that simply can't be replaced. And just like football fandom, Heinz is fueled by a kind of irrational love, the same unwavering loyalty Heinz fans have for the brand. So the next time you wanna gather with friends to talk about how this is the year for your team, remember to add Heinz to the menu. It has to be Heinz. Stock up on Heinz. Available at retailers nationwide. [upbeat music]

[upbeat music] Will your future boss be a clanker?

LP
Lukas Pedersen1:20

I don't know what it means. I'm, I'm not Native American, sorry.

AH
Alex Heath1:23

Oh, wow.

EH
Ellis Hamburger1:23

Impossible. So you don't spend much time on TikTok then, do you, my friend?

AH
Alex Heath1:27

This week we've got Lukas Pedersen, the co-founder of Andon Labs, a company testing the limits of AI by having it operate in the real world. The people's instincts when they're checking out with an AI is to barter. Why do you think that is?

LP
Lukas Pedersen1:41

I think we have, like, some filters when we're talking with humans that we don't have with, with AIs. Like, imagine going to the cashier at the store and like, "What if I robbed you? What would you do?"

EH
Ellis Hamburger1:51

Andon got its start with a viral vending machine run by AI at Anthropic HQ. Now, it's actually opening stores and cafes entirely managed by AI.

AH
Alex Heath2:00

We also talk about why he's so convinced that people are going to be working for AIs sooner than you probably think. Do you really believe that, that all software is gonna be abstracted away by next year?

LP
Lukas Pedersen2:11

Uh, it's 2026 now. Yeah, right.

AH
Alex Heath2:13

[laughs]

LP
Lukas Pedersen2:13

Uh, yes. Uh, the answer is yes, I still stand by it.

EH
Ellis Hamburger2:16

Welcome to Access, where the people shaping tech's future say what they really think.

AH
Alex Heath2:21

I'm Alex Heath.

EH
Ellis Hamburger2:22

And I'm Ellis Hamburger.

AH
Alex Heath2:23

Let's get into it.

[upbeat music] Okay, welcome to the show. I have a good segue here, Lukas, which is that I know you see society changing completely as a result of AGI in a couple years, but we're still figuring out Wi-Fi connectivity issues and audio connectivity issues for our podcast. How can those both be true at the same time? [laughs]

LP
Lukas Pedersen2:49

Yeah, so there's, there's a couple... I have a, I have a, a very serious answer to this. There's a couple of technologies like nuclear fusion, quantum computing, uh, Wi-Fi, stuff like this, that are, like, far bigger projects than, than AGI. So once AGI comes, then they will be solved, so you don't have to worry. Like, five years maybe, then, then quantum computing and, and Wi-Fi will be solved.

EH
Ellis Hamburger3:11

Yeah, I think, uh, Wi-Fi has been one of the primary antagonists of my entire life. Uh, I feel like I've been the family Wi-Fi router guy doing 192.168.1.1 to solve

Episode notes

What happens when your boss is AI? Alex and Ellis sit down with Andon Labs co-founder Lukas Petersson to talk about what it looks like when AI moves out of the chat window and into the real world. They discuss AI-run stores and vending machines, why people behave differently when interacting with AI, and what happens when machines start managing businesses on their own. They also get into the idea of humans working for AI, whether all software is about to disappear, and how close we really are to that shift.
