Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shamas Radi Allahu Anhu was one of the senior Sahabah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. He was especially known for his ability... He was known as an orator. He was Khatib Al-Ansar. He was the spokesperson of the Ansar, and he was also one of the right-hand men of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Just like Hassan bin Thabit was a master poet, and any time there was any sort of competition or any poets that would, uh, speak against Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam or compete with the eloquency, uh, then Hassan bin Thabit Radi Allahu Anhu, he was always at the forefront in defending Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam's honor. He was always there whenever it came to poetry. Like that, Thabit ibn Qays Radi Allahu Anhu was also there whenever it came to speaking. There were different times where other delegations also would come and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would appoint Thabit ibn Qays Radi Allahu Anhu to address those delegations, those different wufood that came. He was known to be, uh, extremely captivating in his speech. Whenever he spoke, then the audience was com-- it was captured, mesmerized, and they were completely captivated. And he had this wonderful quality... He had many wonderful qualities, but some have written about him that he accepted Islam very early on after Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam sent Sayyidina Mus'ab Radi Allahu Anhu, Mus'ab bin Umair, to Medina Munawwara. And when he would recite Quran, then like with... There are different stories of other Sahabah Radi Allahu Anhu who accepted Islam. Some have written that Thabit bin Qays, almost immediately after hearing the Quran being recited, he also, uh, his heart was so receptive, was so pure, like so many other Sahabah Radi Allahu Anhu, and very quickly he accepted Islam. And when you look at the heart of Sayyidina Thabit bin Qays Radi Allahu Anhu, then Subhanallah, there's many-- there are many wonderful lessons for you and I to take. One of the most famous things that he is known for is his reaction when verses of Surah Al-Hujurat were revealed. So when these verses were revealed, "Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la tarfa'oo aswatakum fawqa sawti annabiyyi wala tajharoo lahu bilqawli kajahri ba'dikum liba'din an tahbata a'malukum wa antum la tash'uroon." Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala said, "O you who believe, do not raise your voices over the voice of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam." So many mufassirun when discussing this ayah said that it was revealed with regards to Sayyidina Abu Bakr and Umar Radi Allahu Anhuma. There was a delegation of Banu Tamim that came, and normally the habit of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam whenever any group came, especially towards the end of his life, many tribes existed in Arabia that didn't have the opportunity to come and see Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Sometimes they would send a few people on their behalf, and it would be their job, their responsibility to go back and to
