754 turns · 1 hr 53 min[upbeat music] Now, this is Drive with Shane McInnes. We are always running for the thrill of it, thrill of it. Always pushing up the hill, searching for the thrill of it.
Good afternoon. Welcome to a Friday edition of Drive. A busy show coming up. You can be part of it at any time, 133693. Your email is drive@3aw.com.au. Well, eight weeks from tomorrow, Victorians will go to the polls, and whilst recent polling suggests Jess Wilson and the Coalition are in the box seat to form government, many believe One Nation will play a role in how the state is run beyond November 28th. Tomorrow, here in Melbourne, One Nation will launch its Victoria campaign. But before that, the party's leader in Victoria, Warren Pickering, joins me on Drive. Warren Pickering, good afternoon.
Afternoon, Shane. How are you?
I'm well. So the government and coalition have been drip-feeding policies for the better part of a few weeks now. What can Victorians expect from tomorrow's campaign launch of One Nation?
Uh, so tomorrow we should launch about 95% of our candidate suite. There is a couple that are still in the onboarding process, but we will get to 100%. We'll also launch the full policy platform for a better Victoria.
So the full policy platform, I, I guess one of those policies has to be around crime. And you no doubt saw in the Herald Sun yesterday a Fresh Water poll saying the number one issue for Victorians at this state election is going to be crime, youth crime and bail. Is it the number one issue for One Nation?
Absolutely it is. Look, in all the background work we've been doing for the last sort of 12 months, community engagement, stakeholder engagement, crime is the key issue in this state right now. People need to feel safe in their homes and their places of work and in our cities and on our streets once more.
How do you make that happen?
You make that happen by taking a solution-oriented, pragmatic approach, not an expensive one, uh, to ensuring we can get more police on the streets, get our empty stations manned, and ensuring bail laws, uh, a- and sentences are befitting of the crimes. Mate, there needs to be consequences.
So you c- y- you can commit that there will be more police on the beat under One Nation? 'Cause I do notice on your website it still says, uh, an update is coming when it comes to crime policy, but you can tell us here today, more police on the beat and more stringent bail, as in if I break bail once, do I go to jail?
Yes, you do.
And that's a One Nation commitment here and now?
That's, that's correct, mate. I won't give you too many exclusives as the launch is tomorrow. Uh, however, that is the intent of a One Nation government, absolutely.
Pauline Hanson has said previously that cost of living is obviously a, a concern not only for Australians, but for Victorians as a whole. Do you believe you've got the policies that can ease that burden?
A lot of the issues and the tools associated with bringing down the cost of living are very much at the federal level. Uh, and we intend to address those should we secure federal government at the next election. At the state level, we can absolutely mitigate some of the, the, uh, causes associated with the cost
