Hello, everyone. This is OmniTalk Retail. I'm Chris Walton, and you are listening to the Retail Daily Minute, your quickest, fastest breakdown of all the day's top retail news. Today's podcast is brought to you once again with the help and support of ZenLine AI, because you have likely heard about AI agents a thousand times this year. but are also probably wondering what they can do for you as a retailer. So visit tryzenline.ai to book a call and see how agents can bring you more margin. Today is October 5th, 2026. I am just back from Nashville for a couple of days before heading out to Las Vegas once again for the second time in 10 days. to attend this year's NACS conference, that is the National Association of Convenience Stores. And this morning, we've got news on Walmart's new light up digital shelf labels and IKEA's decision to close three of its small format stores. But we begin today with Nike. and a turnaround that, frankly, just got a little bit longer. Nike reported first quarter earnings on Thursday, and according to Retail Dive, revenue fell 4% to $11.2 billion. North America actually grew 2%, but every other region declined. Greater China was down 22%, and Converse fell 28%. Alongside the numbers, Nike announced a new restructuring program called PACE. It consolidates the company into three geographic regions, the Americas, a combined Asia-Pacific and Greater China unit, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It also comes with an unspecified number of layoffs next year and guidance that calls for revenue to fall in the high single digits this fiscal year. Now here's the glass half-empty take. According to BNP Paribas analyst Laurent Vassilakou, Pace is Nike's third restructuring program since fiscal 2024, so third in essentially two to three years, and none of them has produced any operating leverage so far. He also pointed out that the win-now strategy, which was supposed to wrap up by the end of 2025 and then by the end of 2026, went unmentioned on the call with no new timelines offered. Global Data's Neil Saunders was more blunt. He said the plan feels a bit like, quote, rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, end quote. To be fair, and now glass half full, there are some bright spots. Running, training, and basketball are all showing early progress, and Nike says the Air Force One has stabilized. But in the same breath, Nike told us that the Jordan brand is now oversupplied and it needs to pull back on retro product. So one franchise gets fixed and another one breaks. My take is this. Redrawing the regional map does not fix a product problem. And sportswear, Jordan, and China are product and brand problems, clear and simple. Elliot Hill says Nike knows what healthy looks like. Fine, fine. But two years in, what investors need is a date. And the only timeline on offer is more pain through this fiscal year and next.
