Hello, everyone. This is OmniTalk Retail. I'm Chris Walton, and you are listening to the Retail Daily Minute, your quickest, fastest breakdown of all the day's top retail news. Today's podcast is brought to you once again with the help and support of R&S Logistics. Are
you
looking for a fulfillment and distribution
partner?
That's just right. Well, RNS Logistics is small enough to provide custom solutions and that personal touch, while also still boasting 2 million square feet across 10 locations in the Southeast. With technology that can scale your growing e-commerce operations, visit rswarehousingsolutions.com and get your quote today. And I'm also pleased to introduce Zenline AI because you have likely heard about AI agents a thousand times this year, but are also probably wondering what they can do for you as a retailer. Visit tryzenline.ai to book a call and see how agents can bring you more margin. Today is September 24th, 2026, and this morning we've got news on Instacart's new delivery tie-ups with GoPuff and Airbnb and Sam's Club's push into personalized offers right at the register. But we begin today with McDonald's opening up its wallet in a very big way. At its investor day in Chicago on Wednesday, McDonald's finally put numbers behind its McDonald's Next strategy, including a pledge of roughly $8.5 billion to in support of franchisees through 2026 to fund restaurant upgrades, new technology and operational improvements. About $5 billion of that is slated to reach franchisees by 2030 in the form of rent relief and direct capital contributions. The centerpiece here is something McDonald's calls Restaurant Next, which centers around new equipment, a new restaurant design, and an AI-powered operating system called ArchIQ. McDonald's says the full package should add roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow to a typical U.S. restaurant, and that franchisees should earn back their investment in about four years. The company is also targeting operating margins in the low to mid 50% range by 2030, up from 46.1% last year, along with a 1.5 point gain in global market share in both chicken and beverages. Those are all big promises, and the context matters here as well. U.S. comparable sales rose just 0.8% last quarter, and domestic guest counts actually fell. So this is as much a defensive move as it is an offensive one. The old playbook... accelerating the arches, bet heavily on digital and delivery. This new one bets on the four walls, the equipment, the design, the crew, and yes, even AI. Tellingly, McDonald's is also launching a food quality and hospitality initiative called Make It Golden on October 5th, which would have been Ray Kroc's 124th birthday, which also brings up a point that is the key piece I'd watch closely. Technology can shape seconds off a drive-thru, but if the food and service don't get noticeably better, no AI operating system is going to bring lapsed guests back through the door. And the franchisees being asked to co-invest will be the first to tell us whether that $100,000 cash flow number holds up in the real world.
Miracle is the catalyst of commerce. Over 450 retailers are opening new revenue streams with marketplaces,
