And this morning, we've got news on the nearly $10 billion Americans spent online during Amazon's prime big deal days and CVS bringing its pharmacy-focused store format to Stella Lefty's favorite city, Boston. But we begin today with a deal rumor that, if true, would be one of the stranger strategic moves in recent restaurant history. The Financial Times reported on Thursday that Starbucks has worked with advisors in recent months on a potential takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill. Now, let's be clear about what this rumor is and what it isn't. The report is based on unnamed sources. Starbucks told Reuters it does not comment on rumors and speculation and that it remains, quote, laser focused on its turnaround. Chipotle did not respond at all. And Semaphore separately reported that, according to people close to Chipotle, no takeover bid has actually been received. Still, Wall Street took it seriously. Chipotle shares jumped 6% on Thursday, giving the burrito chain a market value of about $41 billion, while Starbucks, valued at roughly $107 billion, closed nearly flat. The connective tissue here is, of course, Brian Nicol, who ran Chipotle for about six years before taking the Starbucks job in 2024. And I get the appeal. Nickel knows the brand cold and Starbucks international licensing relationships could, in theory, speed up Chipotle's expansion overseas where it has only around 100 restaurants. But I ask you, is now really the time for this? Starbucks is two years into a turnaround that isn't finished. It has committed at least $500 million to labor and its adjusted operating margin last quarter was 14.4%, which was down from 16.7% just two years ago. Nickel himself said in July that there is more work to do. Buying a $41 billion company, likely with borrowed money or new shares in the middle of all that, is a lot to ask of shareholders. Even the analyst at RBC who thinks Chipotle investors would welcome nickel back says the strategic rationale is unclear. So until someone explains why a coffee company needs a burrito company, beyond the fact that they share a line on one CEO's resume, color me skeptical. And besides, anyone who has ever watched Blazing Saddles knows coffee and burritos likely don't go together at all.
