Today is October 14th, 2026, and this morning we've got news on Kroger's plan to cut more than a third of its corporate workforce, and Albertsons pulling its guidance to launch a full-blown business review. But we begin today the story that sounds like the plot of a bad techno thriller, but it is unfortunately very much real. Hackers have hit hundreds of supermarkets across France, remotely cranking refrigerators and freezers up to as hot as 50 degrees Celsius, or 122 degrees Fahrenheit overnight. According to CNBC, citing Reuters, the attack hit stores at Carrefour, Monoprix, Intermarché, and Cooperativa, and reportedly E. Leclerc as well, spoiling fresh and frozen food and forcing stores to empty their cases. Intermarché's parent company, Les Mousquetaires, says 180 of its French stores were affected, and it expects losses in the several millions of euros. And here's the key detail. The hackers didn't come in through the retailer's own systems. They came in through a third-party service provider that manages the refrigeration in those stores. One security analyst says the attack also reached stores in Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany, and even Belgium. The European Union's Agricultural Commissioner went so far as to say the weaponization of food has become a reality, and it's hard to argue with him. For years, our industry has raced to connect everything in the store, the coolers, the lighting, the HVAC, the shelves, all in the name of efficiency and energy savings. But every one of those connected devices is a door, and every vendor with remote access is holding a set of keys. So if you run stores, I'd ask this: Do you actually know which of your vendors can touch your equipment remotely and how they're protecting that access? Because after this week, everyone had better know the answer to those questions.

[upbeat music] All right, we are back, and our next story comes from Cincinnati, where Kroger is reportedly preparing to cut more than a third of its corporate workforce. According to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, Kroger will eliminate roughly 3,000 of its approximately 8,200 corporate positions over the next three years, and that comes on top of nearly 1,000 corporate jobs it cut last year. The move comes from CEO Greg Foran, the former head of Walmart US, who took over at Kroger in February. Foran
