This morning, we've got news on Neighborhood Intelligence walking away from its acquisition of F9 Brands and Francesca's Chapter 11 liquidation plan getting confirmed by a bankruptcy judge. But we begin today with Petco's costly lesson in loyalty program math. On this week's Q2 earnings call, CEO Joel Anderson said that after relaunching Petco perks, customer point redemption volumes far exceeded the company's initial projections. enough to weigh on net sales to the tune of what CFO Sabrina Simmons described as mid-single-digit millions of impact. Before the launch, Petco was reportedly tracking ahead of its second quarter outlook of 0.3% growth. Instead, sales came in essentially flat year over year. A new version of Petco perks, which took effect in late June, made redemption easier. Customers now earn 10 points per dollar spent on most products, 30 points per dollar on private label, with 1,000 points redeemable for a dollar off. Removing friction is usually the goal with loyalty relaunches, but here it appears the company underestimated just how many people would actually cash in. Anderson says Petco has since deployed what he called post-launch guardrails on redemption velocity and that leadership believes the worst of it has passed. Petco did report its second straight quarter of positive same-store sales up 0.6%, which is progress after four quarters of declines. But it's a good reminder that loyalty programs, like most retail incentives, are a balancing act, and Petco just found out the hard way What happens when you tip too far toward generosity?
