Sughd Region Museum (Historical Museum of Sughd) is the main regional history museum in Khujand, housed inside the reconstructed Khujand Fortress on the right bank of the Syr Darya. The combination of fortress walls outside and modern, well‑lit exhibition halls inside makes it one of the most interesting cultural stops in northern Tajikistan. This is possibly the best museum I have ever been to. Also you can pick up some great stuff in the gift shop. I love it!!!
Despite being located within the larger Khujand Fortress, the footprint of the Sughd Region Museum is really quite small. The best part of the museum was the basement with its painted walls and sphinx statue.
The Sughd Museum in Khujand is a fascinating place full of history and culture. The exhibits are well-organized and offer a deep insight into the region’s rich heritage. The building itself is beautiful, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Khujand!

Sughd Region Museum in Khujand might be modest in size, but it offers a rich glimpse into the city’s layered history. What really stood out for me was the beautiful mosaic of Alexander the Great on the basement wall—such a striking and symbolic piece, given Khujand's ancient roots. Beautiful exterior of the museum, built to look like a gated fortress, so beautiful at sunset with the spot lights on. There are many vendors selling children toys, candies and snacks. To tour the inside it’s best to go with their tour guide like we did, without it you will missed to much of the history. Like the basement color tile mosaics. So detailed and beautiful.
