I'm a pharmacist who ended up building the whole AI stack. At Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, I lead AI/ML engineering across IRIS, a clinical retrieval and question-answering platform. I work on document ingestion, hybrid retrieval, reranking, evaluation, self-hosted model serving, application code and the user interface. In clinical AI, the joins between those parts are usually where things break. I run large language models with vLLM, fine-tune smaller models, build evaluation datasets and regression tests, and operate services on Linux with Docker and Podman. I also work
