Plaintiffs are 18 of 51 forensic scientists (to whom we refer as the Scientists) who worked for the Chicago Police Department (CPD) crime lab until July 1996, when they were transferred en masse to the Illinois State Police (ISP). Unhappy with their salaries after the transfer, the Scientists brought suit under Title VII alleging that ISP intentionally discriminated against them in the way that it structured the salary terms for the newly absorbed group, a majority of which were members of racial or ethnic minorities.
