MEMORANDUM OPINION AND ORDER

ASPEN, District Judge:

In this pro se prisoner rights case under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (1982), plaintiff Arthur Ford has sued the Illinois Department of Corrections (“IDOC”) and several correctional officials, asserting that the defendants violated the eighth amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. In essence, Ford claims that his work at the Joliet Correctional Center’s mattress factory injured his already precarious health, and that the medical care he received both before and during his employment was inadequate.
