Defendant, Lawrence Andrews, was indicted for murder, armed robbery, and aggravated battery, and his first trial resulted in a hung jury. Following a second jury trial, defendant was convicted of murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1), armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 18 — 2), and aggravated battery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 12 — 4). The trial court sentenced defendant to an extended term of 70 years’ imprisonment on the murder conviction (see Ill. Rev.
