This is an adoption proceeding which is contested by the natural mother, appellant Claire C. Claire was 20 years old when she became pregnant with the child Daniel C. At the time, she lived with her parents in The Bronx and was a senior in college. She was not *48married. Claire is a Roman Catholic and is apparently quite devout. Feeling ashamed, she did not tell her family about her pregnancy.
