In 1978, Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (the “PDA”), which amended the definition of discrimination on the basis of sex in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title VII”) to provide that it included discrimination in employment “because of or on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.” 42 U.S.C. § 2000e(k).
