Defendant was convicted of first degree murder by a jury and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment. This court affirmed his conviction in People v. Moleterno (1990), 199 Ill. App. 3d 15, 556 N.E.2d 703. Defendant subsequently filed a petition for post-conviction relief pursuant to section 122 — 1 of the Illinois Code of Criminal Procedure of 1963 (Ill. Rev.
