On May 21, 1999, following a bench trial, defendant, Mazen Al-Saiegh, was convicted of transporting alcohol without a license, MCL 436.1901; MSA 18.1175(901). Defendant was sentenced to one year of probation. Subsequently, defendant, arguing that the statute in question did not specify that a license was required to transport beer, filed a motion for a new trial or, alternatively, for a directed verdict of acquittal.
