OPINION

Defendant, Charles Harris, was convicted of first degree murder. The circuit court of Champaign County sentenced him to 55 years’ imprisonment. While his direct appeal was pending, defendant filed a pro se petition under the Post-Conviction Hearing Act (the Act) (725 ILCS 5/122 — 1 et seq. (West 2002)).
