The issue presented in this matter is whether a grandfather may adopt his granddaughter to co-parent with his daughter, thereby terminating the parental rights of the biological father. The child lives with her mother and maternal grandparents. The father has a history of mental health problems, substance abuse, and criminal involvement. The grandfather argued that an adoption would afford him legal rights and protections necessary to continue to care for his granddaughter as well as eliminate the negative influence of the father.
