Following a bench trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Tyrone Love, was convicted of the voluntary manslaughter of his wife, Sharon. On appeal, the appellate court reversed the conviction on grounds that the State failed to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant’s conduct caused the injury which contributed to his wife’s ultimate death. (45 Ill. App. 3d 259.) This court granted the State leave to appeal.
